What it is

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough T4 and T3 — hormones that regulate metabolism in nearly every tissue in the body. Without them, the heart, digestion, nervous system, and temperature regulation all slow down.

Symptoms to watch for

  • Chronic fatigue that doesn't improve with sleep
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Weight gain without changes in diet
  • Dry skin, hair loss, thinning eyebrows
  • Constipation and sluggish digestion
  • Brain fog, forgetfulness, poor concentration
  • Facial puffiness, hoarse voice

What happens if it's left unaddressed

  • Worsening symptoms and reduced quality of life
  • Elevated cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
  • Goiter — an enlarged thyroid gland
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Pregnancy complications and fertility issues
  • In severe, untreated cases — myxedema, a life-threatening condition
